Overview

The Department of Laboratory Animal Science was established at Osaka City University, Medical School. Animal experiments are indispensable for medical research. The important roles of the Department are to educate students and staff about experimental zoology and to conduct research. The progress of medical studies using experimental animals is remarkable, and need for animals is also increasing in clinical and basic medical research. However, it is also important to protect animals, so we must always keep in mind the principle of the three Rs (Replacement, Reduction and Refinement) when we carry out animal experiments. At the Center, we educate users about laws to follow when conducting animal experiments, handling of experimental animals and maintenance of experimental animal health (SPF) in order to make sure that they can conduct excellent research in better prepared facilities.

From 2017, the Department started to offer the service of making genetically modified mice (KI, KO) using the CRISPR-Cas9 system, keeping frozen sperm and fertilized eggs.
