Overview |
The Department of Neurosurgery at OCU was established in 1968 and is one of the oldest neurosurgery departments in Japan. In the year 2000, the Department of Neurosurgery and the Neuroscience program in the Graduate School of Medicine were jointly reorganized by the University. Since its establishment, our department has been one of the leading institutions in the field of neurosurgery, particularly in skull base surgery and spinal surgery. Clinically, we provide expertise on various fields of neurosurgery including brain tumors, spinal surgery, stroke, surgical treatment of epilepsy, intracerebral endovascular treatment, stereotactic radiotherapy, and, especially, skull base surgery. We are continuously working to provide high-quality medical and surgical treatment in the various areas of neurosurgery. Our top focus is performing the safest and most reliable surgical treatments possible for patients of any age. To that end, we have adopted cutting-edge diagnostic technologies and a surgery support system with extensive use of information technology. In addition to CT and 3-Tesla magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), we use brain PET, MEG, 3-dimensional rotation digital angiography and 24-hour continuous electroencephalogram monitoring equipment. We also provide stereotactic radiotherapy and chemotherapy for brain tumors, surgical treatment of epilepsy based on various neuro monitoring and early treatment of cerebral aneurysm by stent-assisted treatment modalities. We are conducting various research projects on neurofunctional preservation with the aid of neuroimaging like magnetoencephalography and brain PET, as well as clinical research on various new surgical strategies in neurosurgery and development of new chemotherapy for malignant brain tumors. |
