Overview |
Our laboratory was started in 1998 to conduct basic research on Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders. One of our notable achievements was identifying a new APP mutation (Osaka mutation) from a Japanese pedigree with recessive familial Alzheimer’s disease (2008). In 2015, with a new leader, we shifted our focus to translational research on dementia and neurodegenerative diseases including Parkinson’s disease and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Our goal is to develop effective medicines to cure and/or prevent these disorders. To this end, we have started collaboration with several pharmaceutical companies. To date, we have published several papers on anti-dementia therapeutics, including one on development of a new antibody to phosphorylated tau for passive immunotherapy for tauopathy (2015) and another reevaluating rifampicin, a well-known antibiotic, as a prophylactic against Aβ and tau oligomers (2016). These studies have gathered much attention and have been reported on several times by the press in Japan. |
