I have been interested in lifestyle and culture of foreign people for a long time. I want to have an international view on medicine, so doing a clinical clerkship in the U.S. turned out to be a really good experience for me.

What surprised me first was racial diversity. Thomas Jefferson University is located in Philadelphia. I saw various races like White, Black, Asian, Hispanic and so on. They have their own religions and ethics, but are living together. I realized this fact and felt that the U.S. is a very unique country.

Seeing a different health care system was also an amazing opportunity for me. A big difference is the degree of participation in the health insurance system. In the U.S., about one of six people don’t have health insurance. It is difficult for poor people to receive sufficient medical treatment.

JeffHOPE is a student-run free clinic located in homeless shelters throughout Philadelphia. All of the physicians, residents, and medical students are volunteers. I actually visited a homeless shelter and I had a chance to join their activities. The patients had various disease and were really welcoming us. I was deeply impressed by how enthusiastically the students were doing their jobs such as taking history, conducting physical examinations, making an assessment, and consulting for the doctor. I strongly felt that JeffHOPE is good not only for the homeless people but for the medical students because they have opportunities to take the initiative in treating the patients and it will surely encourage the students.

Finally, I am very glad to have such a special program. The experience I had in Thomas Jefferson University will always encourage me to do my best as a doctor. I would like to thank all the persons concerned.
