Our department of Ophthalmology started in October 1945 with Professor Kusunoki as chair. Professor Ichizo Ikeda succeeded to the chairmanship in May 1949. Then, Professor Michiro Matsuyama succeeded in April 1974, Professor Tokuhiko Miki in 1990, Professor Kunihiko Shiraki in 2002 and Professor Shigeru Honda in 2018. The last four professors’ specialty was fundal diseases, and thus our department has been skilled at diagnosis and treatment of vitreo-retinal diseases such as age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, central serous chorioretinopathy, retinal vein occlusion, rhegmatogenous retinal detachment, macular holes and preretinal membrane. Our department has many machines newly developed for diagnosis and surgery that enable us to provide up-to-date care as a member of our highly sophisticated medical center. In addition, we have been engaged in establishing “precision medicine” for several retinal disorders using genetic information and biomarkers of each patient.
