Overview |
In 1949, Professor Atsushi Okabayashi, who was chief of the Department of Pathology of the National Institute of Infectious Diseases, was appointed as a professor at Osaka City University and founded the laboratory of the first Department of Pathology. Professor Shoji Fukushima, the 5th generation professor, changed the laboratory name to "Urban Environmental Pathology" when the graduate school was reorganized. At that point, the department’s research was focused on models of chemical carcinogenesis and risk assessment in animal models. Since 2005, Professor Hideki Wanibuchi, the 6th generation professor, has continued that research on risk assessment of chemical substances. At that time our department was changed to "Molecular Pathology" and has continued to develop robustly ever since. Our department has a history of over 60 years since its founding. Our famous departmental event named “Tougenkai” is organized every year and department alumni interact with current members and share the latest knowledge. Pathologists need to not only make useful clinical findings through biopsy and autopsy but also explore the structural aspects of biological phenomena with the aim of deepening their understanding of molecular biological mechanisms and disease processes. At our department, we study early risk assessment models for environmental carcinogens with the aim of cancer prevention and search for early diagnostic biomarkers of cancers using experimental animal models. We are vigorously conducting research which could help to build up basic research data and overcome cancer. |
