Overview

The Cardiovascular Surgery team is part of the Second Department of Surgery at Osaka City University. The Second Department of Surgery was established in 1951 by Professor Yaemon Shiraha. He started a thoracic surgery team first, and then organized a cardiovascular surgery team. Strife between students and university authorities broke out around 1970, and the university hospital was in chaos. After that, the cardiovascular surgery team was unfortunately inactive for 15 years. Dr. Usui (associate professor) restarted the cardiovascular surgery team in 1983, and Dr. Suehiro succeeded him in 1990. Dr. Suehiro became a professor of the Second Department of Surgery and Cardiovascular Surgery in 2003. Dr. Shibata became a new professor in 2015.

Our team performs operations and conducts research on adult cardiovascular surgery. Recently, we have performed more than 200 cardiovascular operations in a year. We have a 99% success rate for mitral valve repair and are one of the top institutes for mitral valve surgery. We are now trying minimally invasive cardiovascular surgery with small incisions.
