Overview |
The staff of the Department of Hepato-Biliary-Pancreatic Surgery consists of members of the Departments of Hepato-Biliary-Pancreatic Surgery and Pediatric Surgery at Osaka City University Hospital. The Department of Hepato-Biliary-Pancreatic Surgery started in 1969 as a part of the Second Department of Surgery and changed to the department of Hepato-Biliary-Pancreatic Surgery in the Graduate School of Medicine. The Department of Pediatric Surgery was established in 1957. In the Department of Hepato-Biliary Surgery, we study the pathogenesis, physiology, diagnosis, surgical treatment, and multidisciplinary treatments for malignancies in the hepato-biliary-pancreatic field including hepatocellular carcinoma, cholangiocarcinoma, gallbladder cancer, pancreatic cancer, carcinoma of the papilla of Vater, and benign diseases including cholelithiasis and pancreatico-biliary maljunction. In the Department of Pediatric Surgery, we study various pediatric diseases including congenital biliary dilatation, pancreatico-biliary maljunction, and congenital biliary atresia. We also study about living donor liver transplantation for end-stage liver disease and congenital biliary atresia. For these studies, we cooperate with other departments at Osaka City University and other institutes. We participated in the establishment of guidelines for hepatocellular carcinoma, intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma, pancreatico-biliary maljunction, congenital biliary dilatation, inguinal hernia, and prophylactic antibiotics. In the clinical field, we perform laparoscopic surgery for various diseases and improve safety management. Recently, we investigated the pathogenesis, diagnosis, and treatment of occupational cholangiocarcinoma caused by exposure to chlorinated organic solvents and the results were used to make the policies of the Japanese government and WHO. We always publish such information in medical journals and present at conferences all over the world. |
