Overview |
The Division of Thoracic Surgery is a branch of the Medical Department of Surgery at Osaka City University (Cardiovascular Surgery, Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery, Gastroenterological Surgery, Thoracic Surgery and Pediatric Surgery). We mainly perform surgical treatment for chest malignancies including lung cancer. As our standard surgery for lung cancer, we perform video-assisted surgery with a mini thoracotomy and make a persistent effort to use a minimally invasive surgical approach to reduce the physical burden on patients without affecting the safety and reliability of surgery. Recent progress in diagnostic imaging methods has made it increasingly possible to detect early-stage lung cancer. These peripheral small lung lesions are difficult to diagnose by conventional diagnostic methods such as bronchoscopy and CT guided biopsy, so we are actively working on diagnosis and treatment with thoracoscopic surgery for such lesions. We are actively involved in multimodality treatment before and after operations in cooperation with the departments of respiratory medicine and radiology. We have also achieved good results for more extensive operations such as extended surgeries and combined resections, with full cooperation from the departments of cardiovascular surgery, hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery, gastroenterological surgery, and pediatric surgery, as well as operations for severe complications such as myocardial infarction and liver cirrhosis. For patients who are unable to undergo surgery, we make a strong effort to improve their quality of life (QOL) by performing bronchoscopic tumor ablation and tracheal stent placement. We also perform surgery for benign diseases. |
